The Problem of College Readiness
The lack of college readiness among college students is a significant challenge in higher education. Too many high school graduates are entering higher education under prepared for college-level courses and too few under prepared students successfully complete developmental education courses and transfer into four year institutions.
Are YOU College Ready?
So, how do you determine if you are college ready? Below are the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Benchmarks for college readiness. If you meet the minimum on any of the following assessments, you are ready for college level work without taking developmental courses at any two or four year institution.
Student scores above standard on ACT:
Composite: 23
English: 19
Math: 19Note: If a student scores a composite of 23 on the ACT, but only one score is above the 19 minimum, they are TSI Exempt for that subject. Ex: ACT Composite 23, English 21, Math 18 – TSI Exempt from English only.
Student scores above standard on SAT:
SAT Administered On or After March 5, 2016:Verbal: 480
Math: 530Note: There is no combined score on the SAT.What do you do if you do not meet the minimum TSI benchmark?
What do you do if you do not meet the minimum on any of the assessments? You can schedule to take the TSI Assessment Test at HCC, WCJC, or with your high school counseling office in the spring of your senior year. If you do not pass the TSI Test, you will be required to take developmental courses when you begin college, so it's VERY important to study for this exam!
