GPA for the class of 2019-2022
The GPA system used in FBISD is referred to as a 100 Point Scale. With this system, the 100 point scale is calculated by adding all of the semester averages earned by a student and dividing by semesters attempted. This method is considered the most accurate reflection of a student’s cumulative work. The 100 point scale results in a more accurate Rank in Class (RIC). The 100 point scale can be converted to the Four Point Scale which is the most common scale for college admissions, NCAA and scholarship applications.
In the calculation of GPA for RIC, certain advanced courses receive an additional weight as outlined below:
Advanced Placement (AP) and Beyond AP courses
Advanced Academic Course (AAC) Dual Credit courses
On- Level Courses
- Receive 10 point weight
- Receive 5 point weight
- Do not receive any weighted points
Example of a high school student’s grades:
Physics (on level) 86 = 86 points
English III AP 94 = 104 points (10 additional points added for AP)
US History Dual Credit 84 = 89 points (5 additional points added for Dual Credit)
Athletics 100 = 100 points
Choir 100 = 100 points
Pre-Cal AAC 86 = 91 (5 additional points added for AAC)
Journalism 94 = 94
Total points = 664 points divided by 7 = 94.8571429
If the student requires the GPA to be converted to a weighted 4.0 scale, the following banded range would be used for each semester course average and then divided by the number of semesters:

Using the grade range above, the student could convert the GPA as follows:
Physics- 86 = 3
English III AP- 94= 5
US History Dual Credit- 84= 3.5
Athletics- 100= 4
Choir- 100 = 4
Pre-Cal AAC-86=3.5
Journalism-94=4
*Total points = 27 divided by 7 = 3.8571
GPA for the class of 2023 and Beyond
Any student entering 9th grade in 2019-20 and after shall have all courses weighted as follows:

When a college or scholarship application requires the 100-point scale, the cumulative GPA shall be converted to a 4-point scal e. The following is the conversion used for the weighted 4-point scale:

Class Rank Updates
Graduating Class of 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023
The graduating classes of 2020-2023 shall have class ranks communicated by Fort Bend ISD in the following manner: October of the 10th grade year, September of 11th grade year, June following the 11th grade year, September of the 12th grade year, mid-term of the 12th grade year, and at the conclusion of high school. Graduating seniors shall have honor graduate recognition calculated at the end of the 3rd nine-week grading period for graduation ceremony purposes.
Graduating Class of 2024 and Beyond
Starting with the Class of 2024, class rank shall only be calculated for the Top 10% of each class for purposes of applications to institutions of higher education, as required by state law. Fort Bend ISD shall provide to each student in the Top 10% notice of their class rank with a defined numerical rank out of the total specified class size, subject to the day the rank is run. These notices shall be provided, January of 11th grade year, June following the 11th grade year, September of the 12th grade year, January of the 12th grade year.
Note for Class of 2019 and Beyond – New Honor Rank Criteria
The Class of 2019 will be the first to graduate under the 100 Point GPA scale. During this policy revision in August 2014, the FBISD Board of Trustees approved a new Honor Rank criteria that took affect with the graduating class of 2019. Previously, FBISD students who were in the top five percent of their class graduated Magna Cum Laude; students whose class rank fell within the next ten percent graduated Cum Laude.
Beginning in the spring of 2019 and going forward, the new Honor Rank system will include a new category, Summa Cum Laude, in addition to Valedictorian, Salutatorian, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude. The new criteria is based on a student’s GPA, rather than where they fall within the percentage of their class.
- Valedictorian Highest Cumulative GPA
- Salutatorian Second Highest Cumulative GPA
- Summa Cum Laude GPA = 97 or higher
- Magna Cum Laude GPA = 96–93
- Cum Laude GPA = 92–90
To be eligible for graduation with honors, a student must meet the following requirements.
- Not have withdrawn from an elective District program, e.g. an academy, and enrolled at the student’s zoned campus within the four consecutive semesters immediately preceding graduation.
- Not have withdrawn from a campus where the student attended on a transfer and enrolled at the student’s zoned campus within the four consecutive semesters immediately preceding graduation.
- Not have transferred from the student’s zoned campus to another campus within the four consecutive semesters immediately preceding graduation.
- Meet additional eligibility requirements for valedictorian and salutatorian (top honors), requiring completion in no fewer than eight semesters, and continuous enrollment in the same high school in the District for the four semesters immediately preceding graduation.
