Supporting Our English Language Learners
-
Juan Seguin Elementary supports a diverse group of students. Many of our students come to us with English as their second language. In our efforts to support the success of all students, we provide both Bilingual classes as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) support services.
JSES offers a Transitional Bilingual Early Exit program that serves students identified as English language learners. JSES provides instruction in literacy and academic content areas in grades K-5. Primary grades focus on students' first language, so students can make an easy transition to all English instruction in upper grades.
The mission of the ESL department is to help children who have two or more languages to increase their proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing in English. Many of the teachers at Juan Seguin are ESL certified, so my job is to support them and their students in the acquisition of English skills. Through Sheltered Instruction strategies it is our hope to make English more accessible to all students to help ensure academic success.
