ONE-WAY DUAL LANGUAGE
PROGRAM MODEL
Pillars of Dual Language Education
FBISD is continuing the One-Way Dual Language (OWDL) Program Model for Pre-K through 4th Grade in the 2025-2026 school year, replacing the Transitional Early Exit Bilingual Program Model.
The OWDL program is a bilingual program model in which native Spanish-speaking students use their primary language and English to excel academically while becoming bilingual/bi-literate and socio-cultural competent. Instruction starts with 10% English in Pre-K, gradually increasing to a 50/50 Spanish-English ratio by 3rd Grade, and maintaining this balance through 5th grade.
The goal of one-way dual language immersion is for program participants to attain full proficiency in Spanish as well as English.
