FBISD schools receive national environmental certifications

FORT BEND ISD (October 23, 2024) – Crawford High School and Lakeview Elementary School have been deemed LEED-certified buildings, and 12 other district schools received ENERGY STAR Certifications.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a certification program that provides comprehensive third-party verification of resource efficiency for building projects.

Buildings are assessed in the following areas: Sustainable Sites; Water Efficiency; Energy & Atmosphere; Materials & Resources; Indoor Environmental Quality; Innovation and Regional Priority.

Crawford High and Lakeview Elementary are the district’s ninth and tenth LEED-certified campuses.

Meanwhile, 12 FBISD campuses received ENERGY STAR Certifications.

ENERGY STAR-certified buildings significantly reduce energy consumption, resulting in cost savings and a lower environmental impact through decreased greenhouse gas emissions. The 12 campuses are:

  1. Bush High School
  2. Elkins High School
  3. Marshall High School
  4. Crockett Middle School
  5. Garcia Middle School
  6. Hodges Bend Middle School
  7. Lake Olympia Middle School
  8. Colony Bend Elementary School
  9. Glover Elementary School
  10. E.A. Jones Elementary School
  11. Mission Bend-Glen Elementary School
  12. Townewest Elementary School

ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

To earn the ENERGY STAR, eligible buildings must earn 75 or higher on a scale of 1 to 100 — indicating that they operate more efficiently than at least 75 percent of similar buildings nationwide. FBISD’s energy data is compared to other K-12 school districts in the same climate as south Texas.
Once certified, the buildings must undergo annual recertification to maintain their status.

FBISD actively works to enhance building health to increase the number of campuses eligible for ENERGY STAR Certification in the future.
