Fort Bend ISD celebrates National Bow Tie Day, salute to superintendent
Fort Bend ISD (August 29, 2024) – All across the district, students, teachers and staff added a touch of class to their outfits by wearing bow ties on Wednesday to celebrate National Bow Tie Day and as a salute to FBISD Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith who typically wears them every day.
Dr. Smith visited Ferguson, Goodman and Lakeview elementary schools where he was greeted by cheerleaders, took group photos, heard a choir sing, and spent time interacting with students who described bow ties as being “kinda cute” and “businessy.”
“I like the look of bow ties,” he explained to students. “They are different, and they don’t hang down so you don’t get anything on them like you might with regular ties. Also, back when I was teaching, kids would sometimes pull on my tie when I bent down to talk to them, but you can’t pull on a bow tie.”
At Ferguson Elementary, Dr. Smith received a Ferguson Fireflies bow tie and sat with students on a rug in one classroom, conversing with them and hearing about their Bright Bucks reward program.
At Goodman Elementary, Principal Dr. Jonathan Sutton is also known for wearing bow ties, so the school was excited about celebrating with him and Dr. Smith. An anonymous donor gave the school almost 300 of the ties through FBISD’s Collaborative Communities Department as a gift for students.
At Lakeview Elementary, the superintendent listened to story time in the library with pre-K and kindergarten students. Afterwards, Principal Megan Boler and her staff presented Dr. Smith with a formal bow tie in an elegant box.
